We invited Eric Lin, Senior Patent Counsel of Genentech, to our first special meeting in 2024. He led a casual discussion about data in biotech. We got many suggestions from him. Despite the practical difficulties associated with the replicable nature of data, it is important to always seek to understand reality and technologies in conversations with colleagues, and then think through measures to maximize the value of data as a legal expert. By the time the “answer”' becomes known, it can be said that we will be two to three years behind the leading edge. At this special meeting, we learned not only how to deal with legal issues related to data in biotech, but also the importance of maintaining curiosity and thinking through ways to add value as legal experts.
2024年の最初の特別ミーティングにGenentechのSenior Patent CounselのEric Linさんをお招きしました。彼には、バイオテックにおけるデータについてカジュアルな議論をリードしていただきました。私たちは彼からの多くの示唆を得ました。複製されやすいデータの性質に伴う実際的な困難がある中でも、同僚との会話の中から常に現実や技術を理解しようと努めることが大切であり、その上で、データの価値を最大限に引き出す方策を法律の専門家として考え抜くことが重要である。「正解」が知れ渡った時には、先端から２、３年遅れていると思った方がよい。今回の特別ミーティングでは、バイオテックにおけるデータの法律問題への対応だけではなく、好奇心を持ち続け、法律の専門家としての付加価値の出し方を考え抜くことの大切さを学びました。
