"Protection" is usually considered as a key in the field of IP. But what if, you are asked to formulate an IP strategy which strikes a balance between openness and defensiveness? Our special guest, Mr. Hidekazu Kamino, IP Counsel of Mercari, Inc., a famous Japanese unicorn company, shared his valuable experience in that regard. According to him, Mercari's corporate mission, values and culture which puts emphasis on "Trust & Openness" provide a guidance for where to strike a balance between the IP protection and open source development. His words made us all think: Without protecting its IP, a company cannot achieve its mission. Without, however, contributing to the open source community, a company may lose its strength as it would be difficult to attract talents from all over the world.
