We invited Keith Bergelt, CEO of Open Invention Network (OIN), as a guest speaker. It was fabulous and really enlightening. His talk covered not only the aspect of defensive use of patents but also business issues, for example, how open source software works in business and how an IP team works with other teams. Senior IP professionals should be in the loop of strategic discussion on use of open source, but they are often excluded. One of the solutions is to participate in a community of like-minded people with various background and to learn from them. At the end of the meeting, we found something in common between CHIZAI Toastmasters club and OIN: both are a good community!
