We invited Jonah Probell for our special program this morning. He gave us a talk about "patenting for value" or outline of his new book he is writing now. His idea may be simple with three step: 1. figure out what’s actually patentable, 2. figure out how much it’s worth, and 3. spend the budget on the most valuable options. As he admitted, it is difficult to implement it. One of the issues he raised is that the patenting-for-value process may not be understood by most executives and investors. Now that Japanese Corporate Governance Code sets supplemental principles relevant to intellectual property like "[t]hey should also provide information on investments in human capital and intellectual properties in an understandable and specific manner, while being conscious of the consistency with their own management strategies and issues," IP professionals will be demanded to talk with business terms about IP. One of the bright sides is artificial intelligence. It may reduce time and cost of the first step. In sum, we enjoyed discussion with Jonah. Thank you!
本日午前にJonah Probellさんを特別プログラムにお招きしました。価値重視の特許化（彼が今書いている新しい本のアウトライン）についてお話ししてくださいました。彼のアイデアは３つのステップからなるシンプルなものです。１．本当に特許化が可能か理解する、２．どのくらい価値があるか理解する、３．最も価値ある選択肢に予算を割り当てる、というものです。彼も認めていましたが、これを実践することが難しい。彼が提示していた課題の１つが、価値重視の特許化プロセスが、ほとんどの企業幹部や投資家に理解されない可能性があることです。日本のコーポレートガバナンスコードが知財に関係する「人的資本や知的財産への投資等についても、自社の経営戦略・経営課題との整合性を意識しつつ分かりやすく具体的に情報を開示・提供すべきである」といった補充原則を規定するようになった今、知財専門家は知財についてビジネスでわかる言葉で話すことを期待されるでしょう。明るい見通しの１つはAIです。AIのおかげで第１ステップの時間とコストを提言できるかもしれません。要するに、Jonahとの議論を楽しみました。ありがとうございます！
