We had a special program about US IP Updates this Saturday with James Abe, moderated by Takeshi Iizuka, member of CHIZAI Toastmasters. It was like a reunion because we had a similar program with James last year. Starting with Section 101 and SEPs, he gave a lot of insights in the context of everyday IP practice in California. I was personally interested in a patent filing downward trend in life science in the first half partly because researcher could not go to a lab due to COVID-19. WFH solves some problems in the pandemic. But we should look to analogue world in assessing the damage of COVID-19, too.
今週末の土曜日にJames Abeさんをお迎えし、知財トーストマスターズのメンバーである飯塚健さんのモデレートによる特別プログラム（米国知財アップデート）を開催しました。Jamesさんとは昨年も同様のプログラムを開催しており、Reunionのようなものでした。101条やSEPから始まった議論では、カリフォルニアで知財実務をしている日々の感覚を背景とした深い理解に触れることができました。個人的には、ライフサイエンス分野の上半期の出願減には、COVID-19の影響で研究者が実験室に行けなかったことが影響しているのではないかという見解が興味深く思いました。WFHはパンデミックの問題の一部を解決しますが、COVID-19の影響を評価する際には、アナログ世界にも目を向ける必要があるでしょう。
