Silicon Valley, Updated

We invited Yoshinari Oyama, Senior Director of NEDO Silicon Valley, to our special program. He shared what he has learned about intellectual property in his first year in Silicon Valley. His talk covered COVID-19 pledge, NPE and litigation funding. He cited an interesting chart, showing that spending on patents and patent litigations go up even in the midst of economic downturns around 2000 and 2008. One of the attendees said, "it might happen again in the midst and after the COVID-19 pandemic." Actually, nobody knows the future. But, it may be better for IP professionals to be ready for possible demand.

今回の特別プログラムには、NEDOシリコンバレー事務所次長の大山さんをお招きました。赴任１年目で学んだシリコンバレーの知財について情報を共有してくださいました。彼の発表は、COVID-19宣言、NPE、訴訟ファンドに関するものでした。とても興味深いグラフを引用していました。そのグラフでは、2000年と2008年頃の景気後退局面にもかかわらず、特許への支出と特許訴訟の数が増加に転じていたことが示されていました。参加者の１人は「COVID-19のパンデミックの最中や後にも同じことが起こるかもしれない」と言っていました。正直なところ、何が起こるかは誰も知りません。しかし知財専門家は、ありうる需要に応えられるように準備しておいた方がよいかもしれません。
